Exercise -1

Exercise 1

Working for optimal channel depth for a constricted canal

Problem Statement

A canal, 8m wide, is planned to supply water to the agricultural land in a rural area. Maximum possible flow is 13m3/s through the canal. Due to some site-specific issues, its width has to be reduced consistently from 8m to 5m from point A to D as shown in the figure below. As a hydraulic design engineer, you are asked to check if the proposed depth (1.3m) of the channel is sufficient. The canal is concrete lined so Manning’s n can be assumed to be 0.012. The slope is smooth and is 0.003.
